Peru, Cradle of the pre-hispanic civilisations

We start our journey in the city of the Kings, Lima. Afterwards, we head out to the north of Peru, our first spot is Huaraz where we enjoy its nature beauties inside the National Park of Huascaran. Trujillo and Chiclayo are waiting for us to show off their Pre-inca remains and their magnificent museums. After a bath of natural beauty and history we turn to the south of Peru to see one of the most remarkable islands, the Ballestas, to enjoy nature and wildlife. Then, we go to Nasca to be amazed by giant and enigmatic figures in the desert. This is just preceding to our visit to the white city of Arequipa, surrounded by volcanoes. Next to Colca, there is Colca Canyon which is awaiting us to show the majestic flight of condors. Progressively getting higher we head out to Puno and the highest navigable lake in the world and the travel around its typical and inhabited islands. Traveling through the mountain range possessor of the most wonderful panoramas, we reach to the cradle of the Incas, Cusco and the impressive Machu Picchu.

Day 1: Arrival in Lima
Welcome and transfer to your hotel. Meeting with the guide who will give you all the necessary information for your travel in Peru.

Day 2: Lima Pachacamac

In the morning, you will visit Lima: It includes la Plaza de Armas, the Government Palace, the Cathedral and San Francisco church, one of the oldest in the city, and its catacombs. After that, you will take a vehicle to Miraflores, the modern district of the city near the Pacific Ocean, and Barranco. Lunch in the city.

In the afternoon, go to the archeological site of Pachacamac, 30 km south of Lima. Pachacamac was one of the most important sacred centers of pre-Hispanic America. Where several successive civilizations have built pyramidal temples and platforms over a period of over 1000 years. In all this time they worshiped Pachacamac, the god of earthquakes. 

First, we visit the site museum and then the ruins of Pachacamac to know the different sectors like the painted temple, the sun temple, the temple of women (Acllahuasi).

Day 3: Lima Huaraz

Transfer to the bus station (option to get a flight) and departure to Huaraz located in the mountain range well known for its scenic natural beauty like the lakes and the snow-capped mountains of the Cordillera Blanca (White Mountains) to the east and the Cordillera Negra (Black Mountains) to the west. Arrival and transfer to the hotel.

Day 4: Huaraz Chavin de Huantar

Departure to visit Chavin de Huantar, a leading religious center in the Andes. The highest legacy of this culture is Chavin de Huantar an archaeological complex made of stones where we can find the “Cabezas clavas” (keystones of projecting blocks shaped as human heads). 

Also, a labyrinth of well-ventilated corridors and chambers. Deep inside the corridors you'll come upon the Lanzón de Chavín. This 4-meter-high (13-foot-high) dagger like rock carving represents an anthropomorphic deity (complete with fangs, claws, and serpentine hair); it sits elegantly at the intersection of four corridors.

IN OPTION: 1 DAY TOUR TO LLANGANUCO:

Departure to Yungay to visit the two beautiful Llanganuco lakes, which are surrounded by banks of Tortora reeds, and by fragile forests of some of the world’s highest growing trees Quenuals and Quisuars. The lakes are called Chinacocha and Horqoncocha, names representing the belief that one is female and the other one is male, both formed the Llanganuco lagoon protected by the Huascaran and Huandoy peaks. Walk around the qeuña woods.

Day 5: Huaraz Trujillo

Transfer to the bus station to continue our tour to Trujillo. Day off to wonder around, enjoying the never ending spring city.

Day 6: Trujillo - Chan Chan- Huanchaco

Early in the morning we head out to just 5 km south of Trujillo to the Temples of the Sun and the Moon, which corresponds to what was the ancient Capital of Moche Culture. The other historical symbol of Trujillo is Chan Chan, the World's Largest Mud City, capital of the Chimu. 

The tour ends visiting the fishing promenade of Huanchaco, where we can see "Caballitos de Totora”, small reed boats made by fishermen.

Day 7: Trujillo Chiclayo
Transfer to the bus station and continue our tour to Chiclayo. At your arrival transfer to your hotel.

Free afternoon to visit the city or rest. 

Night in the hotel selected. 

Departure for a day to Lambayeque. Visit of Sipan Museum, the royal tombs of Sipan, the national museum of Sican and the valley of the 26 pyramids.

Our next spot in excursion is the impressive necropolis of Huaca Rajada, a Mochica funeral center where a great number of tombs have been discovered and where the tombs of the Old Lord of Sipan (3rd Century) famous for its objects in gold and semi-precious stones were unearthed in the 80's by Peruvian archaeologists led by Dr. Walter Alva. Come back to the hotel by the end of the day.

Day 9: Chiclayo Lima Paracas
Early in the morning, we go to the airport to fly to Lima (Lima-city tour optional) 

In the afternoon, we head out to the bus station to catch a bus to Paracas. At your arrival transfer to your hotel.

Day 10: Paracas Ballestas islands Nazca

In the morning we pick you up from your hotel and transfer to the Paracas harbor. Departure on boat to Ballestas islands for a 2.30 hr. tour.

On the way, we can see the famous geoglyph known as candelabra carved in the dune, seen only from the sea. Touring by boat around these small Islands you can easily see hundreds of birds, such as flamingos, pelicans, boobies, Inca terns and cormorants, flying all over the islands. The islands are also home to the Humboldt penguins which are usually seen at the entrances of little caves and grottos. After that, come back to the harbor.

After a brief rest, we take a bus to continue to Nasca. At your arrival, transfer to your hotel.

Day 11: Nasca Arequipa

In the morning, transfer to the aerodrome (the over flight is optional) to observe the enigmatic figures that were made over 2,500 years ago, seen from the air only. Figures such as the spider, the humming bird, the monkey and others. They are located into an immense labyrinth of lines, strings and triangles. What is the most amazing is the giant scale in which these figures were made. Then we take our vehicle to drive inside the desert toward the Chauchilla cementery; ceremonial center that shelters Peruvian mummies dating from more than 1000 years old. 

In the afternoon, departure by bus to Arequipa. Arrival late in the evening. Transfer to your hotel.

Day 12: Arequipa, tour of the white city

In the morning, we pick you up at your hotel to begin the City Tour around The Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, Church of the Company, Cloisters of the Company to see the beauty of the colonial architecture of the "White City” due to the use of ashlar bricks (volcanic rocks). Then, we get into the monastery of Santa Catalina built in 1580 and enlarged in the 17th century, our last spot is the Yanahuara and Carmen Alto viewpoints. Afternoon off.

Then return to hotel.

Day 13: Areaquipa - Colca
We make an early departure by bus to the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world (3.400 mts./ 11.000 ft.).

The route to the canyon goes through the national reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca where the largest camelids population in the region are found,  like llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos. We arrive in Chivay after getting settled down in our hotel.

Free lunch. In the afternoon, we have a short walk before taking a bath in the spring hot waters of Calera for the ones who want.

Day 14: Arequipa – Chivay – Condor's cross – Puno

Early in the morning, we head out to the viewpoint of the La Cruz Condor (Condor’s cross), where, in addition to see the depth of the Colca Canyon, you will see the flying condors above us (The condor is the biggest existing bird). On route, we can see terraces constructed by the ancient Peruvians, that impress many visitors. On the way back, we make short stops in some andean villages of the area as Yanque, Coporaque, Pinchollo.  

Free lunch in Chivay before continuing our way back by bus to Puno. Accomodation in your hotel.

 Day 15: Puno Uros and Taquile islands

Early in the morning, we will have an unforgettable trip by boat on Titicaca Lake to visit the floating islands of Uros, ancient pre-Inca inhabitants of the lake, known as the Water Tribe. Their main economic activity is fishing, farming and handicraft. These natives have build their own islands by periodically adding new layers of reeds (Scirpus Totora), fiber plant of the family of papyrus. They also use this material to build houses and boats.

 Then we sail to the beautiful Taquile Island, inhabited by Quechua-speaking natives who have developed from generation to generation, an efficient and original social system as well as fine hand weaving techniques. We walk through hills and archaeological sites to take our boat back to Puno.

Day 16: Puno Cusco

In the morning, transfer to the bus station. Then, we begin our journey to the imperial city of Cusco by touristic bus, traveling along the high plateau of Collao, stopping at the town of Ayaviri, an important center of textile and animal breeding, to visit Kalasaya, the impressive Temple, ruins of the ancient Pukara. Along the way, we stop at Raqchi, where we see a spectacular Inca Sanctuary built by the Inca Pachacutec and dedicated to the great Inca God Viracocha. It has a great central wall with a stone foundation of Inca architecture. About 70 miles later, we also make a stop at the highest point of this trip (4335m./14222 ft.), La Raya, which is the border between Cusco and Puno. During the tour we can also see herds of vicunas and llamas. 

During the trip, we pass next to the lovely Wacarpay lake that offers spectacular views of mountains reflected in calm waters.

Then we proceed to the beautiful town of Andahuaylillas, to visit the church of San Pedro, better known as the "Sixtine Chapel of the Andes" due to its polychrome ceiling.

Lunch: buffet in a quiet countryside restaurant, where you can enjoy the delicious cuisine of the region. Welcome and transfer to your hotel.

 Day 17:  Maras salt mines – Moray Chinchero

We pick you up at the hotel and travel by private vehicle to Maras, in the Sacred Valley, which is an Inca settlement also named Salineras. These are extensive terracing salt areas, controlled, and used since Inca days. Then we travel passing through small villages to get to Moray, with fantastic views of the Valley and the surroundings snow capped mountains. Moray was used by the Incas as a sort of open-air crop nursery, known locally as the laboratory of the Incas.

Finally, we head out to Chincheros, where we can enjoy the local handicraft and the magnificent colonial church built on the foundation of an Inca palace. In the afternoon we return to Cusco.

Day 18: Cusco sacred Valley Aguas Calientes

This day, we visit the famous Sacred Valley starting off in Pisac, an important archaeological site in the region of Cusco. First we see the archaeological remains and then the colorful market held on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning.

Here we experience a vibrant atmosphere of communities, traditions and bartering. There are many handicrafts and textiles made in true Pre-Columbian style.

Our next spot is Ollantaytambo, a strategic inca site.

After a wonderful day, we take the train to Aguas Calientes, the Machu Picchu village, where we will spend the night.

Day 19: Machu Picchu Ollantaytambo Cusco

This day we take a shuttle that takes us up to the citadel of Machu Picchu. Then, we enjoy an extended guided visit of the great archeological Peruvian paradigm for about 3 hours. After that, we have free time to explore and wonder around the citadel before getting down to the town and return to Ollantaytambo by train. Then transfert to Cusco by bus.

Option: to get on the Huayna Picchu (limited to the first 400 registered visitors), with an additional cost of USD12 per person.

Day 20: Cusco Sacsayhuaman

We begin our tour by visiting the Cathedral in the heart of the city, with its renaissance facade and baroque and plateresque interiors, it remains one of the most remarkable example of colonial silver and gold work as well as very important carved wood altars. It is possible to see very important art pieces of local artists from the Cusco school from those times.

Our next spot is Qoricancha Temple better known as the 'Temple Covered in Gold'. It was the most important sanctuary devoted to Sun God during the times of the Inca Empire. Following our tour we get to Sacsayhuaman, an Inca Temple which used to served as a protection for Cusco. Then Qenqo that means "many-turn crooked labyrinth".

 After being impressed by Qenqo we head out to Puca pucara. Finally, we get to Tambomachay a Temple dedicated to the water, considered as a spirit purification element.
