Cusco Chaullay La Playa Aguas Calientes Machu Picchu
Salkantay trek is a good alternative to the Inca trek to visit the Machu Picchu.
Salkantay is the summit of the Vilcabamba Mountain range with 6264 meter-height. It is the 12e highest peak of Peru, and it’s located at 40 kms away from Cusco.
Salkantay is a Quechua word which means “wild”, and it will bring you back to the Inca period.
You can enjoy the snow-coverer mountains, the tropical forest and also flowers with multipled colours.
This trek will allow you to reach Aguas Calientes in 4 days, and get to the Machu Picchu Mountain, the culmination of the trek.
Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa
At 5:00 a.m. departure from Cusco in our tourist transport to Mollepata located at 9.200 feet, enjoying the beautiful views of colorful villages like Limatambo, passing through the town of Tarawasi, and Apurimac valley.
Arriving at the village of Mollepata, we will meet our horsemen and horses, we will walk approximately 6 hours through traditional Andean communities like Cruzpata, Challacancha, heading towards Soraypampa (3800 masl), where we will spend the night.
Day 2: Soraypampa - Chaullay
After the breakfast we will hike about 4 hours to start our ascent to 4650 m ( 12.500 feet). From this point we will see the most amazing views like the snowcapped peak Salkantay (18 .000 feet ). Then continue 3 hours hike up the mountain watching lakes like the Humantay, the Huayanay, and also small lakes. After, we will get through a long descent to the camp at 2950 meters ( 9.000 feet) Chaullay.
Day 3: Chaullay - Playa Saguayaco
After the breakfast, walk down to the river. On the way we will enjoy a beautiful tropical jungle and we can see coffee trees, bananas and other fruits, including some beautiful orchids. Short stop for lunch at Lluscamayu where you can taste the passion fruit.
We continue trekking along the river. Then take rest and overnight in Playa Saguayaco.
Day 4: Playa - Santa Teresa - Aguas Calientes
Early in the morning after our breakfast, we will take a local bus to go to Santa Teresa, where we can take advantage of its thermal baths Cocalmayo. Then, continue walking to Machu Picchu hydroelectric central. Where we will have lunch and then continue our trek to the village of Machu Picchu where we stay in a hostel with private bathroom and breakfast.

Day 5: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
After having our breakfast in our hotel, we will take the first bus up to Machu Picchu; one of the new wonders of the world: the tour usually takes 2-3 hours, and after the guided tour you will have free time to visit and enjoy the sanctuary.
After a nice experience in Machu Picchu, we will go down to Aguas Calientes to take our train back to Cusco.
The horses only carry the camping equipment to 5 kilos of luggage for the journey if you want extra help to carry your luggage you can hire an extra horse in Cusco but It does not mean the horse go near you. Please bring a small backpack to carry the necessary things.
Any excess luggage can be stored in Cusco at the hotel.
